Can AI answer questions about my Xero data? The options in 2026
Yes. You can ask Xero's own AI, JAX, inside Xero; connect ChatGPT or Claude through an app or connector that signs in via Xero; or use a specialist assistant built on your ledger, such as Nella or Vibe CFO. There is no single best tool: the right fit depends on where you want to ask, what the tool may read or change, and whether you want chat answers or prepared reports.
The short answer
Yes. In 2026 there are three realistic ways to ask questions about your Xero data in plain English: use the AI built into Xero itself, connect a general chat assistant such as ChatGPT or Claude through an app or connector, or add a specialist assistant that sits on top of your ledger. They all read the same underlying figures. What differs is where you ask the question, what the tool is allowed to read or change, and what it was designed to do.
There is no single “best” tool for every small business. The useful question is which of these fits the way you already work, and what you are comfortable letting it access.
Option 1: Xero’s own AI (JAX) and Xero Analytics
JAX (“Just Ask Xero”) is Xero’s built-in AI. Xero describes it as an “AI financial superagent” that coordinates AI agents to help automate bank reconciliation, data entry and getting paid, and that answers questions about your Xero data with charts and tables. It is available in every Xero region. Xero’s UK JAX FAQ says there is currently no additional charge for JAX chat for subscribers. In March 2026 Xero and Anthropic announced that Claude would power JAX (Xero media release, 27 March 2026).
Xero Analytics, built with Syft (which Xero acquired in 2024), provides reporting and cash-flow forecasting inside Xero. It is a reporting tool rather than a chat assistant, but it covers many of the same questions about trends and cash.
The appeal of both is simple: nothing extra to connect, and you stay inside the software you already use. Details are on Xero’s JAX page and Xero Analytics page.
Option 2: ChatGPT or Claude with a connector
A general chat assistant cannot see your Xero account on its own. It needs an app or connector that holds the connection to Xero. You sign in through Xero’s own login screen, approve what the app may access, and from then on the assistant can fetch figures through that app when you ask.
Two routes exist today:
- Xero’s integration in Claude. In May 2026 Xero announced that users with an active Xero subscription can bring their Xero data into Claude conversations, asking about cash position, overdue invoices and profit trends (Xero media release).
- Third-party apps and connectors that run inside ChatGPT or Claude and connect to Xero on your behalf.
“Read access” means the app can look at your records, such as invoices, bills, bank transactions and reports, but cannot create, edit or delete anything. Some integrations ask for more than that, so the permission screen at sign-in is worth reading line by line. For a step-by-step look at how these connections work, see our guide to whether ChatGPT or Claude can connect to Xero.
Option 3: A specialist assistant on top of your ledger
Specialist assistants connect to Xero through its secure sign-in and are built around finance questions rather than general conversation. They typically turn ledger data into fixed outputs, such as a health score, a cash forecast or a monthly pack, as well as answering questions.
- Nella reads Xero, QuickBooks Online, Sage or FreeAgent and answers plain-English questions about your own figures on web chat, WhatsApp, or as an app in ChatGPT and a connector in Claude. It produces a 0–100 finance health score, cash and runway, a 3- or 6-month cash-flow forecast, profit and KPIs, a monthly management pack, anomaly flags and a VAT, PAYE and Companies House date timeline. It is built by the accountants at AccTek Ltd.
- Vibe CFO describes itself on its Xero app store listing as “an agentic AI CFO for Xero”, where you can ask about cash flow, margins, aged debtors and board packs. The listing says it is Australian built and supported.
Other tools focus on one job rather than chat. Float, for example, does short-term cash-flow forecasting from live Xero or QuickBooks Online data.
How the options compare
| Option | Where you use it | What it reads | Built for |
|---|---|---|---|
| JAX | Inside Xero | Your Xero organisation | Answering questions and automating tasks such as reconciliation and getting paid |
| Xero Analytics | Inside Xero | Your Xero organisation | Reporting and cash-flow forecasting |
| Xero integration in Claude | Claude.ai | Your Xero data, per Xero’s announcement | Asking about Xero data alongside other work in Claude |
| Specialist assistant (e.g. the options above) | Its own app, plus chat channels where offered | Your ledger through the ledger’s sign-in | Finance questions, scores, forecasts and packs |
| Float | Its own app | Xero or QuickBooks Online | Short-term cash-flow forecasting |
If you already live in Xero, the built-in tools are the obvious starting point. If you spend your day in a chat assistant, a connector keeps the question where you are. If you want a set of finance outputs prepared for you, a specialist tool is built for that.
What to check before connecting anything
- Permissions. Read the Xero consent screen. Note exactly which areas (accounting, reports, contacts, payroll) the app requests.
- Read versus write. Can the tool only read, or can it create invoices, post journals or change records? If it can change things, check how each change is approved.
- Where data is held. Is your data copied and stored, or fetched each time? In which country, for how long, and is it used to train AI models?
- Disconnecting. You can revoke an app’s access from Xero’s connected apps settings. Check the provider also deletes what it holds when you ask.
- Who else sees it. If your accountant or bookkeeper also has access, agree which tools are connected.
Our own answers to these questions are on the security page and in how we handle your data.
What AI can and cannot do with your Xero data
AI is good at the reading and explaining: finding the figure, comparing it with last month, spotting an unusual transaction and putting it in plain English. It is only as accurate as the books it reads, so unreconciled bank lines or miscoded bills will show up in the answers.
It is not a substitute for professional judgement. Whether to take a dividend, how to treat an expense for tax, or whether the business can take on a commitment are questions for a qualified accountant, who can weigh the figures alongside things the ledger does not record. A sensible split is software for the answers and a person for the advice.
If you want to see what an assistant makes of your own figures before deciding anything, the free financial health check connects read-only and gives you a score with a plain-English explanation. Nella provides financial information and education, not accounting or tax advice.
