Which profit measures and KPIs does Nella track?

Nella calculates the measures that describe how your business is doing directly from your accounting data — revenue, net profit, gross, operating and net margin, cash at bank and runway, debtor and creditor days, current ratio, and how much of your revenue and spend sits with your largest customer and supplier. Each is shown against last month and the same month last year, marked as improving, steady or worsening. Ask about any of them in plain English and the answer comes from your own figures.

How it works

What sits behind the number.

Calculated in code

Every KPI is worked out deterministically from your profit and loss and balance sheet, so the same books always give the same figures. AI writes the explanation; it never sets a number.

Compared both ways

Each measure sits beside last month and the same month last year, so a seasonal dip is not read as a decline.

Profit explained

A month-on-month comparison of your profit and loss shows which lines moved net profit, and by how much.

Budget vs actual

Where your accounting software holds a budget, Nella compares it with actual figures line by line. This is part of Nella Paid.

What it does not do

Stated plainly, because a figure you can trust is one whose limits you know.

  • A KPI is only as current as your bookkeeping. Where the books are behind, Nella says so rather than presenting stale figures as today’s.
  • Some measures need data a platform does not share: supplier concentration is not available on FreeAgent or Sage, and when a figure cannot be calculated Nella shows it as unavailable rather than zero.
  • Cash runway is derived from your ledger, not from a bank connection.

Nella shows what your figures say. Deciding what to do about a falling margin or a rising debtor balance is a judgement for you, and for a qualified accountant where it needs one.

Nella provides financial information and education, not accounting or tax advice. Nella shows you the numbers. When a question needs professional judgement, such as a filing or a tax decision, Nella says so and points you to a qualified accountant.

Where the data comes from

Nella connects to Xero, QuickBooks, Sage, FreeAgent. Nothing in your books changes unless you give permission in Nella. How deeply it reads varies by platform — see the supported-platform table — and how your data is handled is set out in full.
