What does the tax and VAT timeline show?

Nella keeps one timeline of the filing and payment dates that apply to your business: VAT returns and payments, PAYE payments and returns, and your Companies House accounts and confirmation statement. Each date is worked out from a rule published on GOV.UK and your own details — your VAT quarters, your pay dates, your company record — and each shows where it came from. Anything Nella cannot date is listed as a gap, never left out, so an empty list is never mistaken for nothing due.

How it works

What sits behind the number.

VAT

For the 2026/27 tax year, a VAT return is usually due one calendar month and 7 days after the end of the period, and payment is due by the same date. Nella dates each quarter from the months your quarters end, which you tell it once. The Annual Accounting Scheme is covered too.

PAYE

Dated from the pay dates you give Nella, never guessed. For 2026/27, PAYE paid electronically is due by the 22nd of the next tax month if you pay monthly.

Companies House

Your annual accounts and confirmation statement dates come from your company’s record on the public Companies House register.

One list, every channel

The same dates appear on your Today page, in the weekly email and when you ask on WhatsApp, ChatGPT or Claude — with what each date was worked out from.

What it does not do

Stated plainly, because a figure you can trust is one whose limits you know.

  • Corporation Tax dates are not yet worked out for businesses Nella dates on their own. Check them with your accountant or on GOV.UK.
  • A VAT return whose due date has passed is left out rather than shown as overdue, because Nella does not yet hold whether it was filed.
  • VAT Annual Accounting interim payments, the first period after VAT registration, and Direct Debit collection dates are not dated.
  • Nella does not file returns or make payments. Filing is done through HMRC-recognised software or by your accountant.

Rules stated for the 2026/27 tax year, each reviewed against the GOV.UK page linked above. GOV.UK sets out that VAT is still due on the deadline when it falls on a weekend or bank holiday, so Nella shows those dates as they are rather than moving them.

Nella provides financial information and education, not accounting or tax advice. Nella shows you the numbers. When a question needs professional judgement, such as a filing or a tax decision, Nella says so and points you to a qualified accountant.

Where the data comes from

Nella connects to Xero, QuickBooks, Sage, FreeAgent. Nothing in your books changes unless you give permission in Nella. How deeply it reads varies by platform — see the supported-platform table — and how your data is handled is set out in full.
