How does Nella compare your budget with actual figures?
Nella reads the overall budget you keep in Xero’s Budget Manager for the month you ask about and compares it with that month’s profit and loss, account by account. Each line shows the variance in money and as a percentage, marked favorable or adverse where the line’s nature is clear. Spending with no budget line, and budget lines with no spending, are listed separately rather than folded into the totals.

Your Xero budget
The overall budget from Budget Manager, for the month you name.
Matched by account
Each budget line against the same account in the month’s profit and loss.

The gaps, listed
Unbudgeted spending, and budget lines with nothing against them.
What it does not do
Stated plainly, because a figure you can trust is one whose limits you know.
- Budgets are read from Xero only. Budgets kept in QuickBooks, Sage or FreeAgent are not read yet.
- Lines are matched by account name. An account renamed after the budget was set shows as a gap.
- If your Xero connection predates budget access, Nella asks you to reconnect before it can read the budget.
- Nella does not set your budget or decide which variances matter; it shows the differences.
Where there is no budget to read, Nella says so rather than comparing against nothing. More detail and a worked example: How do I compare budget to actual each month?
Nella provides financial information and education, not accounting or tax advice. Nella shows you the numbers. When a question needs professional judgment, such as a filing or a tax decision, Nella says so and points you to a qualified accountant.
Where the data comes from
Nella connects to Xero, QuickBooks, Sage, FreeAgent. Nothing in your books changes unless you give permission in Nella.
