What makes the numbers hard here.
Seasons change the cash
Busy months and quiet months make a monthly average misleading.
Many small invoices
Lots of small jobs mean lots of small balances, and a few late ones add up.
Payroll every week or two
Crews are paid on a fixed rhythm whether or not customers have paid.
Helpers and subcontractors
Payments to the same helper or subcontractor reach the 1099-NEC threshold over a year.
How does Nella help home and field services?
Nella connects to your QuickBooks or Xero company and answers plain-English questions about your own figures — how much cash you have and how long it lasts through a quiet season, which customers have not paid, how this month compares with the same month last year, and when payroll and federal forms are due. It reads your books and answers on the web, WhatsApp, ChatGPT or Claude, so you can ask from the van.
Questions you can ask Nella
These are asked in plain English, and answered from your own figures.
- How much cash will we have at the end of next month?
- Which customers have not paid, and for how long?
- How does this month compare with the same month last year?
- Can we cover payroll on Friday?
- Who is on our 1099-NEC review list this year?
- When are our year-end payroll forms due?
Nella provides financial information and education, not accounting or tax advice. Nella shows you the numbers. When a question needs professional judgment, such as a filing or a tax decision, Nella says so and points you to a qualified accountant.

What Nella cannot do
Nella reads your books. Nothing in them changes unless you give permission in Nella, and it does not reconcile the bank, file anything with the IRS, the Social Security Administration or a state agency, or move money. It reports what your accounting software already holds.
Nella reads the business whose books it is connected to. It does not run payroll, file forms or cover state taxes.
Nella connects to QuickBooks, Xero, Sage, FreeAgent. How deeply it can read varies by platform — the supported-platform table sets out what is read on each. See how your data is handled.
