Read-only by default · how Nella handles your data

How does Nella work with QuickBooks?

Nella connects to QuickBooks Online through Intuit’s own secure sign-in, then answers plain-English questions about your live figures — cash and runway, receivables and payables, federal tax deadlines, profit and margin, and movements down to individual accounts and journals. It reads your QuickBooks data. Nothing in your books changes unless you give permission in Nella.

What it reads

What Nella reads from QuickBooks

  • Monthly profit and loss, by section and by account
  • Balance sheet, plus QuickBooks’ own trial balance report
  • Your full chart of accounts, read in a single query
  • General ledger detail down to transaction level, including manual journal entries
  • Receivables and payables position, with an ageing view of who owes you what
  • Cleared and uncleared bank transactions, so unreconciled items are visible rather than silent
  • Company settings, including your fiscal year end
  • Vendor payments for the year, with card payments shown separately and QuickBooks’ 1099 vendor flag, for the 1099-NEC review list

Nella connects to QuickBooks Online. QuickBooks Desktop is a different product and is not supported. Because QuickBooks exposes journal entries to connected apps, Nella can see manual journals here that are not visible on some other ledgers — useful when a figure moved because of an adjustment rather than a transaction. QuickBooks account numbers are optional and often left blank, so Nella keys on the account itself rather than a number that may not exist. For 1099-NEC, Nella lists every vendor paid in the year from payments, not unpaid bills, with card payments separated. A vendor QuickBooks has not marked for 1099 but whose non-card payments reach the threshold is listed and flagged.

In practice

Questions you can ask

  • “How much cash will I have at the end of next month?”
  • “Which customers owe me the most, and how late are they?”
  • “What journals were posted this month, and by whom?”
  • “What is my gross margin this quarter versus last?”
  • “When is my next Form 941 due?”
  • “How much is still sitting unreconciled in the bank account?”
  • “Which vendors were paid enough this year to be on my 1099-NEC list?”

Nella provides financial information and education, not accounting or tax advice.

The boundary

What Nella cannot do in QuickBooks

There is a fixed list of things Nella does not do in QuickBooks — not as a setting you could change, but because the permission is never requested.

  • Create, edit, void or delete invoices, bills, credit notes or journal entries
  • Match or reconcile bank transactions, or change how anything is categorized
  • File anything with the IRS, the Social Security Administration or a state tax agency
  • Move money, pay a supplier or set up a payment
  • Change your chart of accounts, company settings or user permissions

FAQ

Questions about QuickBooks and Nella

Does Nella work with QuickBooks Desktop?
No. Nella connects to QuickBooks Online only. QuickBooks Desktop is a separate product with a different data model and is not supported.
Can Nella see manual journal entries in QuickBooks?
Yes. Nella reads journal entries on QuickBooks, so adjustments are accounted for alongside day-to-day transactions. On Xero, Nella does not read journals today.
Does Nella need write access to my QuickBooks company?
Not today. Nella reads your QuickBooks data, and nothing in your books changes unless you give permission in Nella.
How do I disconnect Nella from QuickBooks?
Choose Disconnect from QuickBooks in Nella’s Settings, under Connections, or remove Nella from the apps settings in QuickBooks. Either way Nella loses access immediately, and you can ask for your data to be deleted at the same time.
Is my QuickBooks data used to train AI models?
No. Your figures are never used to train AI models. They are used to answer your questions and build your insight pack, and nothing else.
Can Nella tell me what to do about my numbers?
No. Nella provides financial information and education, not accounting or tax advice. Nella shows you the numbers. When a question needs professional judgment, such as a filing or a tax decision, Nella says so and points you to a qualified accountant.
Which tax deadlines does Nella show for a US business?
Federal deadlines for a business whose tax year ends December 31: Forms 1120, 1120-S, 1065 and the owner’s 1040, extensions, corporate estimated tax, and payroll Forms 941, 944, 940 and W-2. It does not cover sales tax or state taxes. See federal tax deadlines.
Does Nella prepare or file Forms 1099-NEC?
No. Nella builds a 1099-NEC review list from your accounting data for you and your accountant to check. It never decides that a form is due, and it does not prepare or file forms. See Form 1099-NEC for this year’s payments.
