Xero AI assistants for Australian businesses: what’s available

There is no single best option. An Australian small business on Xero can use Xero's own AI, JAX, for answers and admin tasks; Xero Analytics for dashboards and short-term cash projections; ChatGPT or Claude through a connector; or a specialist assistant built on Xero, such as Vibe CFO or Nella. The right fit depends on whether you want help doing admin in Xero or plain-English answers about your numbers.

The short answer

There is no single best option for every business. An Australian small business on Xero has four realistic routes to AI help with its numbers: Xero’s own AI, JAX; the reporting and cash-flow views in Xero Analytics; a general chat assistant connected to Xero through an app or connector; and specialist assistants that sit on top of Xero. Which one fits depends on whether you want help doing the admin inside Xero, or plain-English answers about what the numbers mean.

JAX: Xero’s own AI

JAX (“Just Ask Xero”) is built into Xero. On its Australian JAX page, Xero describes JAX as an AI finance partner that answers questions about your financials with charts and tables, offers decision support based on your business data, and helps with tasks such as drafting invoices and quotes. Xero describes JAX more broadly as an “AI financial superagent” that coordinates AI agents for bank reconciliation, data entry and getting paid.

Xero says JAX chat follows the same access rules as the rest of Xero, so each user only sees what their role allows. Check the AU page for current plan inclusions and terms, as Xero notes it may change them.

Xero Analytics

Xero Analytics, built with Syft (which Xero acquired in 2024), adds reporting and cash-flow forecasting inside Xero. Xero’s AU page describes visual dashboards of profit trends and health indicators, and short-term cash-flow projections over the next 7 or 30 days based on upcoming invoices, bills and quotes. It is a view rather than a chat: useful if you prefer charts to questions.

General chat assistants through an app or connector

Many owners already use ChatGPT or Claude day to day. A connector lets one of these assistants read your Xero figures when you ask about them, so the answer is based on your own books rather than general knowledge. One route is through a specialist app: the Nella app in ChatGPT and its Claude connector both answer questions from a connected Xero file (see ChatGPT setup and Claude setup).

Xero has its own route into Claude too. In May 2026 Xero announced a live integration with Anthropic: users with an active Xero subscription can bring their Xero data into Claude conversations to ask about cash position, overdue invoices and profit trends (Xero media release, May 2026). The release does not list which regions or plans it covers, so check availability in Australia.

Assistants built on top of Xero

A specialist assistant connects to Xero and turns the ledger into answers and regular reports. Two examples:

  • Vibe CFO describes itself in its Xero app store listing as “an agentic AI CFO for Xero”. It is Australian built and Australian supported, and the listing says data is “read, not trained on”.
  • Nella connects through Xero’s own secure sign-in and answers plain-English questions about cash and runway, profit and KPIs, and a 3 or 6-month cash-flow forecast. It also produces a monthly management pack, anomaly flags, a weekly brief and a 0–100 finance health score. For Australian businesses it shows BAS lodgement and payment dates, company tax return dates and a GST registration threshold indicator. See the Xero integration and how it compares with JAX.

Descriptions of other products come from their own pages, read on 30 October 2026.

BAS and GST visibility

For most Australian small businesses the questions that come up most are about BAS and GST. Under the ATO’s published schedule, quarterly BAS for 2026–27 is due on 28 October (July–September), 28 February (October–December), 28 April (January–March) and 28 July (April–June); monthly BAS is due on the 21st day of the following month (ATO: BAS due dates). Lodging through a registered tax or BAS agent can change these dates.

GST registration is required once GST turnover reaches $75,000 or more ($150,000 for non-profit organisations), per the ATO’s registration guidance for 2026–27. Any assistant you choose will be most useful here if it can show upcoming dates and how close turnover is to the threshold. More detail: BAS due dates and GST registration.

What to check before connecting any assistant

  • Read or write. Does the tool only read your Xero data, or can it change records? If it can change them, is your permission needed for each change?
  • Permissions requested. Look at the scopes shown on Xero’s sign-in screen (for example invoices, bank transactions, payroll) and confirm they match what the tool needs.
  • Training. Is your data used to train AI models?
  • Disconnecting. Can you remove access and delete your data easily?
  • Who answers when it gets complicated. Is there a route to a qualified person?

Our own answers to these questions are on the security page.

The limits of any AI assistant

These tools provide financial information, not tax or accounting advice. They can show you what the ledger says, when BAS is due and how cash is trending, but the answers are only as good as the bookkeeping behind them. Decisions such as when to register for GST, how to treat a transaction, or how to structure owner pay call for professional judgement: speak to a registered tax agent or qualified accountant. Under the Tax Agent Services Act 2009, only registered tax agents and BAS agents can provide tax agent services for a fee.

Nella provides financial information and education, not accounting or tax advice. Nella shows you the numbers. When a question needs professional judgement, such as a filing or a tax decision, Nella says so and points you to a qualified accountant.

FAQ

Questions people ask

Does Xero have its own AI assistant in Australia?
Yes. JAX (Just Ask Xero) is available to Xero subscribers in Australia. Xero describes it as answering questions about your financials with charts and tables and helping with tasks such as invoices and quotes. Plan inclusions and terms are on Xero's AU JAX page.
Can ChatGPT or Claude read my Xero data?
Only through an app or connector that you authorise with Xero's own sign-in. Without one, a chat assistant can answer general questions but cannot see your figures.
Will an AI assistant lodge my BAS?
Not the assistants covered here. They can show figures and due dates, but lodging BAS is done through Xero, ATO Online services or a registered tax or BAS agent.
Is it safe to connect an AI assistant to Xero?
Check whether the tool reads or writes, which permissions it requests, whether data is used for training, and how to disconnect. Xero shows the requested permissions on its sign-in screen.
Can an AI assistant give me tax advice?
No. These tools provide information. For judgement on GST, BAS treatment or tax planning, speak to a registered tax agent or qualified accountant.
