What makes the numbers hard here.
Runway is the whole question
Every other metric sits downstream of how many months of cash are left, and that number changes with every hire and every invoice.
The board asks between board meetings
Investor questions rarely wait for the next update, and rebuilding the answer by hand each time is slow.
Burn is not one number
Gross burn, net burn and one large receipt pull in different directions, and a monthly average can hide the month that mattered.
Filing season lands on top of fundraising
Form 1120, estimated tax payments and 1099-NEC forms for contractors each run on their own calendar.
How does Nella help startups?
Nella connects to your QuickBooks or Xero company and answers the questions that come up between board meetings — how much cash you hold, what you are burning each month, how long that lasts at the current rate, and how those figures moved since last quarter. It also keeps the federal filing dates for a calendar-year C corporation in view. Runway is calculated from your books, so it is as current as your bookkeeping.
Questions you can ask Nella
These are asked in plain English, and answered from your own figures.
- How much cash do we have, and how long does it last at the current rate?
- What did we burn last month compared with the three months before?
- How much of our revenue comes from our largest customer?
- Which contractors are on our 1099-NEC review list this year?
- When is our Form 1120 due for this tax year?
- How has monthly revenue moved over the last six months?
Nella provides financial information and education, not accounting or tax advice. Nella shows you the numbers. When a question needs professional judgment, such as a filing or a tax decision, Nella says so and points you to a qualified accountant.
What Nella watches between your questions
- Cash and runway, derived from the ledger and updated as the books are
- Monthly burn and how it is trending
- Revenue concentration — how much sits with one customer
- Federal filing dates for your business, once you tell Nella which return it files
- The bank feed: Nella tells you when it stops updating
Cash and deadline alerts are included in the free trial and on Nella Paid.
The rules that apply here
Stated with the tax year they apply to, and linked to the source. Nella reports figures; it does not interpret these rules for your situation.
A calendar-year C corporation files Form 1120 for tax year 2026 by April 15, 2027, or October 15, 2027 with an extension obtained on Form 7004; an extension does not move the payment date (IRS Instructions for Form 1120 (2025), When To File; Tax Payments).
Corporate estimated tax instalments for 2026, for a corporation that makes them, fall on April 15, 2026, June 15, 2026, September 15, 2026 and December 15, 2026 (IRS Publication 542 (01/2024), Estimated Tax: When to pay estimated tax; cross-checked Form 1120 (2025), Estimated Tax Payments).
Form 1099-NEC generally applies to non-employees paid $2,000 or more for services in 2026, due February 1, 2027 (IRS Publication 1099 (2026), What’s New: Increase in threshold for requiring filing of certain information returns and backup withholding).

What Nella cannot do
Nella reads your books. Nothing in them changes unless you give permission in Nella, and it does not reconcile the bank, file anything with the IRS, the Social Security Administration or a state agency, or move money. It reports what your accounting software already holds.
Runway is calculated from what is recorded in your accounting software, not from a bank connection, so it is only as current as your bookkeeping. Nella flags stale or unreconciled data rather than scoring around it.
Nella connects to QuickBooks, Xero, Sage, FreeAgent. How deeply it can read varies by platform — the supported-platform table sets out what is read on each. See how your data is handled.
