Can ChatGPT or Claude connect to Xero? How it works and what it can see

Not on their own. ChatGPT and Claude need an app or connector that holds the connection to Xero: you sign in through Xero and approve what it may read. Xero announced its own integration in Claude in May 2026, and third-party apps such as Nella work in both ChatGPT and Claude. QuickBooks has Intuit Intelligence built in, and some connectors also read QuickBooks Online.

The short answer

ChatGPT and Claude cannot read your Xero account on their own. Neither has a login to your books, and pasting figures into a chat is not the same as a live connection. To ask about live Xero data, you add an app (in ChatGPT) or a connector (in Claude) that holds the connection to Xero for you. You sign in through Xero, approve what the app may access, and the assistant then fetches figures through that app when you ask.

Today there are three main routes: Xero’s own integration in Claude, third-party apps and connectors that work in ChatGPT and Claude, and the AI built into the ledger itself, such as Xero’s JAX or Intuit Intelligence in QuickBooks.

How apps and connectors work

The mechanics are similar in both assistants:

  1. You add the app or connector from the assistant’s app directory or connector settings.
  2. You sign in through Xero. The sign-in uses Xero’s own login page (a standard method called OAuth). The app never sees your Xero password.
  3. You approve scopes. Xero shows which areas the app is asking for, such as accounting transactions, reports or contacts, and whether it wants read-only or write access.
  4. The app holds the connection. When you ask a question, the assistant calls the app, the app fetches the relevant figures from Xero, and the assistant writes the answer.

So the useful question is less “can ChatGPT see my Xero?” and more “what has this particular app been allowed to see and do?”

Xero’s own direction: JAX and Claude

Xero’s built-in AI is JAX (“Just Ask Xero”), which Xero describes as an “AI financial superagent” that answers questions about your Xero data with charts and tables and helps automate tasks such as bank reconciliation. Xero’s UK JAX FAQ says there is currently no additional charge for JAX chat for subscribers (Xero JAX page).

On 27 March 2026 Xero and Anthropic announced a collaboration: Claude to power JAX, and Xero’s financial data and tools coming into Claude.ai, which the announcement said was “expected to be available in the coming months” (Xero media release). In May 2026 Xero announced that the Claude integration had been delivered: users with an active Xero subscription can bring their financial data into Claude conversations and ask about cash position, overdue invoices and profit trends. Xero says data shared between the platforms is used solely for the user’s session and is never used to train Claude’s models (Xero media release, May 2026).

For ChatGPT, Xero said at Xerocon in August 2026 that an OpenAI integration was coming “in the coming weeks” (Accounting Today). Check ChatGPT’s app directory for its current status.

Third-party apps and connectors: one example

Independent assistants also connect to Xero and then appear inside ChatGPT or Claude. As one example, Nella has an app in ChatGPT and a connector in Claude. At a high level:

  1. Create an account and connect your ledger through its own sign-in (how connecting works).
  2. Add the app in ChatGPT or the connector in Claude and sign in.
  3. Ask in plain English: cash and runway, margin, who owes you, upcoming VAT and PAYE dates.

Step-by-step guides are at ChatGPT setup and Claude setup, with overviews on the ChatGPT integration and Claude integration pages. The ChatGPT app and Claude connector are included on the free 60-day trial and the paid plan.

What about QuickBooks?

QuickBooks has its own built-in AI. Intuit describes Intuit Intelligence as “the engine that powers AI in your QuickBooks”, with AI agents for areas including accounting, payments, customers and payroll, plain-language questions, and the option of review by an accountant or bookkeeper. Features vary by plan and some are in beta (Intuit).

The same app-and-connector model applies to using ChatGPT or Claude with QuickBooks Online: an app holds the connection after you sign in through Intuit. The assistant described above also connects to QuickBooks Online (QuickBooks integration).

What the AI can and cannot see and do

Typically can Typically cannot
See Invoices, bills, bank transactions, contacts and reports within the scopes you approved Anything outside those scopes, your Xero password, or data in other systems you have not connected
Do Summarise, compare periods, explain figures, flag unusual items Change records, unless the app was granted write access and you approve the change
Judge Explain what the numbers show Give professional advice on tax treatment or business decisions

Answers are only as accurate as the books. Unreconciled bank lines or miscoded bills flow straight into the answers, and the assistant may not know about transactions that sit outside the ledger.

Security and permissions checklist

  • Who built the app? Check the publisher in the app directory and on Xero’s consent screen.
  • Read or write? Read-only access cannot change your books. If write access is requested, find out how each change is approved.
  • Which scopes? Approve only what the app needs for the questions you plan to ask.
  • Where is data held? Is it fetched per question or stored? Where, for how long, and is it used for AI training?
  • How do you disconnect? Revoke access in Xero’s connected apps settings and in the assistant’s settings, and ask the provider to delete stored data.

Our answers to these questions are on the security page and in how we handle your data. For anything that needs judgement, such as a tax treatment or whether the business can afford a commitment, a qualified accountant is the right person to ask. FAQ

Questions people ask

Can ChatGPT connect to my Xero account?
Not by itself. You need an app in ChatGPT that connects to Xero after you sign in through Xero's own login and approve its access. Xero said in August 2026 that its own OpenAI integration was coming; third-party apps are available now.
Is there a Claude connector for Xero or QuickBooks?
Yes for Xero: Xero announced its integration in Claude in May 2026 for users with an active Xero subscription. Third-party connectors also work in Claude, and some, including Nella's, read QuickBooks Online as well as Xero.
Does ChatGPT or Claude see my Xero password?
No. Sign-in happens on Xero's own login page and the app receives a permission token limited to the scopes you approve.
Can the AI change my Xero records?
Only if the app was granted write access. Read-only apps can look at records and reports but cannot create, edit or delete anything.
How do I disconnect an AI app from Xero?
Revoke it in Xero's connected apps settings and remove it in ChatGPT or Claude. Ask the provider how it deletes any stored data.
