How does Nella work with ChatGPT?

Yes — ChatGPT can answer from your own Xero, QuickBooks Online, Sage or FreeAgent figures through Nella, an approved app in ChatGPT. Open Nella in ChatGPT, choose Connect, sign in with your email or Google, and connect your accounting software through its own secure sign-in. ChatGPT asks Nella; Nella holds the connection to your books, answers from your live figures, and changes nothing in them.

How to connect ChatGPT

1 · Open Nella in ChatGPT

Find the Nella app in ChatGPT and choose Connect. A Nella page opens, showing “Connecting via ChatGPT”.

2 · Sign in or start your trial

Use your email or Google — there is no Nella password. New to Nella? Pick your accounting software and connect it through Xero’s, Intuit’s, Sage’s or FreeAgent’s own secure sign-in. Full steps are in the help guide.

3 · Ask about your numbers

Go back to ChatGPT and ask in plain English. Answers come from your own figures.

There is a fixed list of things Nella does not do in ChatGPT — not as a setting you could change, but because the permission is never requested.

Can ChatGPT connect to my Xero account?
Yes, through an app. With Nella, you connect Xero once through Xero’s own secure sign-in; ChatGPT then asks Nella, which reads your Xero figures and answers. ChatGPT never holds your Xero login, and nothing in your books changes. See Nella for Xero.
Does it work with QuickBooks, Sage and FreeAgent too?
Yes. Nella connects to Xero, QuickBooks Online, Sage or FreeAgent. The depth differs by platform — QuickBooks and Xero go down to account level; Sage and FreeAgent are reporting level — and Nella says when a figure is not available on yours.
Is Nella an official ChatGPT app?
Nella is an app in ChatGPT, approved by OpenAI’s app review in October 2026. It is built by Nella Finance AI Ltd, not by OpenAI, Xero or Intuit.
Is the ChatGPT connector included on the free plan?
It is included during the 60-day trial and on Nella Paid. It is not included on Nella Lite. See plans and pricing.
Does ChatGPT get access to my accounting software?
No. The connector talks to Nella, not to your ledger. Nella holds the connection and answers from it, so your accounting software is never exposed directly.
Can it change anything in my books?
No. Nella reads your figures. Nothing in your books changes unless you give permission in Nella.
How is this different from just asking ChatGPT about accounting?
Without the connector, ChatGPT answers from general knowledge and has never seen your figures. With it, answers come from your own live ledger.
Does Nella give tax advice in ChatGPT?
