Anomaly flags
A cost line that jumped, a new account appearing, revenue moving out of step: flagged for a second look.
Nella Paid Included in the free 60-day trial.
What does Nella flag?
Nella checks your figures every month against fixed rules and flags what is unusual: revenue moving more than 10% on the month or 15% on the year, any cost line moving more than 25%, a new expense category appearing, cash falling more than 10%, debtor days rising by more than five, a net loss, or current liabilities exceeding current assets. With six months or more of history it also flags a month far outside your normal range and a run of adverse moves. Each flag says what moved, by how much and against what, so you can ask about it in plain English.
What sits behind the number.
Fixed, stated rules
The checks are deterministic: the same figures always raise the same flags, and each flag carries the comparison that triggered it.
Against your own history
Movements are measured against last month, the same month last year and your own trailing months, not against other businesses.
Severity
Each flag is marked high, medium or low, so the material ones sit at the top.
Your bank feed
Nella watches your bank feed and tells you when it stops updating, because figures built on a stalled feed look more certain than they are.
What it does not do
Stated plainly, because a figure you can trust is one whose limits you know.
- A flag is a prompt for a second look, not a finding that something is wrong. Many flags have an ordinary explanation, such as an annual bill or a large one-off sale.
- The history-based checks need at least six months of figures, so a newly connected business sees the month-on-month checks first.
- Nella flags what is recorded in your accounting software. It cannot see transactions that have not been entered.
Where no figures have been assessed yet, Nella says so rather than showing an empty list, because “no flags” and “not checked” are different answers.
Nella provides financial information and education, not accounting or tax advice. Nella shows you the numbers. When a question needs professional judgement, such as a filing or a tax decision, Nella says so and points you to a qualified accountant.
Where the data comes from
Nella connects to Xero, QuickBooks, Sage, FreeAgent. Nothing in your books changes unless you give permission in Nella. How deeply it reads varies by platform — see the supported-platform table — and how your data is handled is set out in full.
