Free financial health check
A free financial health check, from your own books
Nella gives you a free financial health check built from your own accounting data. Connect Xero, QuickBooks, Sage or FreeAgent and the Nella Score rates five areas of your business out of 20 each — cash visibility, margin health, debtor risk, bookkeeping quality and growth readiness — then shows which area is holding the total back. It takes minutes, needs no card, and is not a credit check.

Methodology: how the Nella Score is calculated
What the health check looks at
| Area | What Nella reads from your books | Out of |
|---|---|---|
| Cash visibility | Whether your cash position and runway can be seen clearly from your books, and how fresh the data is. | 20 |
| Margin health | Where your profit margin sits and which way it has moved, with guards so a small loss on small revenue is not read as a crisis. | 20 |
| Debtor risk | How much customers owe you, how overdue it is, and how concentrated it is. | 20 |
| Bookkeeping quality | How complete and current the records are: uncategorised items, reconciliation, and how recently the books were updated. | 20 |
| Growth readiness | Whether the trend across several months shows a business in a position to take on growth. | 20 |
The arithmetic runs in code, so identical figures always give an identical score. An AI model writes the explanation you read; it never sets the number.
What the result tells you
You get a score out of 100 and a band: 80–100 Strong, 65–79 Healthy, 50–64 Some areas to watch, and below 50 Several areas to address. The bands are risk-first: if one area scores very low, or Nella finds a serious red flag, the band is capped, so a business with a real problem never reads as Strong on the strength of its other numbers. Each red flag has an Ask Nella button, so you can ask what sits behind it in plain English.
How is this different from a bank or adviser review?
Nella’s health check is built only from your own accounting data, and it is ready minutes after you connect. A review by your bank, a lender or an adviser can take in what your books do not record — your plans, your market, your personal position — and comes with professional judgement. They answer different questions. Nella’s shows where your own numbers stand today, and which area to look at first.
What you need
An accounting platform Nella connects to — Xero, QuickBooks, Sage or FreeAgent — signed in through its own secure sign-in. Nella scores only what it can see: an area it cannot assess is left out rather than counted as zero, and if fewer than four of the five can be assessed you see “Not enough data yet” instead of a number. Trends need at least three months of history. If your books are out of date, the score is marked provisional and capped at 50, with the flag “Books need bringing up to date”. The score is not calculated for charities.
What it is not
It is not a credit score and has no bearing on your credit file. It is not a rating issued by any regulator, lender or professional body. It is not a measure of tax compliance or filing status, it does not compare you with other businesses, and it is not financial or tax advice.
After the free check
Your first Nella Score arrives in your insight pack as soon as you connect, during the free 60-day trial. Keeping it updated as your figures move — alongside the cash-flow forecast and monthly pack — is part of Nella Paid. If you stop after the trial, nothing is charged: the trial takes no card.
Nella provides financial information and education, not accounting or tax advice. Where a low area points to something that needs professional judgement, Nella says so and points you to a qualified accountant.
