What makes the numbers hard here.
Stock is bought before it sells
Cash goes out for inventory weeks or months before the sales come in.
Fees and shipping eat the margin
Platform fees, payment fees and postage come off every order.
Payouts are not sales
Marketplace payouts arrive net of fees and refunds, so the bank does not match the sales report.
Peaks change the cash
Sale periods and the holiday season pull cash and GST into a few weeks.
How does Nella help online retailers?
Nella connects to your Xero or QuickBooks company and answers plain-English questions about your own figures — gross margin by month, how much cash is tied up in stock you have bought, how sales moved against last year, how much GST you have collected, and when your next BAS is due. It reads what your accounting software holds, including sales and payouts your store or marketplace posts to it.
Questions you can ask Nella
These are asked in plain English, and answered from your own figures.
- What was our gross margin last month?
- How much have we spent on stock this quarter?
- How do sales compare with the same month last year?
- How much GST have we collected so far this quarter?
- When is our next BAS due?
- Which costs grew fastest over the last six months?
Nella provides financial information and education, not accounting or tax advice. Nella shows you the numbers. When a question needs professional judgement, such as a filing or a tax decision, Nella says so and points you to a qualified accountant.

The rules that apply here
Stated with the tax year they apply to, and linked to the source. Nella reports figures; it does not interpret these rules for your situation.
Quarterly BAS for the 2026–27 income year is due 28 October 2026, 28 February 2027, 28 April 2027 and 28 July 2027, or 11 November 2026, 12 May 2027 and 11 August 2027 for most quarters when lodged online; you lodge and pay by the same date (ATO - Due dates for lodging and paying BAS; ATO - Due dates for lodging and paying your BAS).
A business must register for GST when its GST turnover reaches $75,000, and has 21 days to do so; GST is 10% (ATO - Registering for GST; Australian Government - Register for GST).
Businesses with GST turnover of $20 million or more lodge BAS monthly, by the 21st of the following month (ATO - Due dates for lodging and paying BAS).

What Nella cannot do
Nella reads your books. Nothing in them changes unless you give permission in Nella, and it does not reconcile the bank, file anything with the ATO or ASIC, or move money. It reports what your accounting software already holds.
Nella reads the figures in your accounting software. It does not connect to your store or marketplace directly, track stock levels, or calculate overseas sales taxes.
Nella connects to Xero, QuickBooks, Sage, FreeAgent. How deeply it can read varies by platform — the supported-platform table sets out what is read on each. See how your data is handled.
